A study of more than 1000 patients published in the New England Journal of Medicine found smokers with COVID-19 were more likely to require intensive medical interventions than those who didn’t smoke. In the study, 3 times more smokers were admitted to an ICU, were placed on a ventilator or died compared to nonsmokers.

Smokers may be particularly vulnerable to COVID-19 for several reasons according to Jaber Alqahtani, a Respiratory Medicine Researcher at University College in London saying there is a “holistic, mechanistic link” between smoking and severe infection due to an increase in ACE2 receptors.

Emphysema and compromised immune function are believed to exacerbate COVID-19 infections. Not only are smokers already at a heightened risk of catching viral infections, but recovering from them becomes a greater challenge as well.

According to Jason Sheltzer, a research fellow at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York, quitting smoking could be beneficial to decreasing COVID-19 susceptibility.
