Emetophobia Defined
The definition of emetophobia is a phobia that causes overwhelming, intense anxiety pertaining to vomiting. Emetophobia can also include subcategories of what causes the anxiety, including:
• a fear of vomiting in public
• a fear of seeing vomit
• a fear of watching the action of vomiting
• fear of being nauseated
While emetophobia is not widely diagnosed, it affects an estimated 1.7-3.1% of males and 6-7% of females. The symptoms and severity vary from person to person.
