Emotional Dysregulation Definition
Emotional dysregulation describes a problem controlling and regulating one’s emotional reactions. Intense and frequent mood swings, trouble reining in impulsive behavior, increased emotional sensitivity, and trouble expressing emotions correctly in social settings are just a few ways this might show themselves.
People who struggle with emotional dysregulation may feel extreme emotions that are out of proportion to the circumstances, such as overwhelming sadness, anxiety, or anger in the face of a minor stressor. Additionally, once their emotions are triggered, they may find it difficult to control themselves, which can make them feel out of control.
Emotional Dysregulation and Doctor Diagnosed Conditions/Solutions
Several mental health disorders, including borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are frequently linked to emotional dysregulation. Medication is often prescribed by psychiatrists and neurologists to help create an environment that is more calm, while the underlying root cause of the problem is not addressed causing medications not to work or doses to be increased over time.
Hypnosis Can Help Improve Underlying Contributing Factors of Emotional Dysregulation
People with emotional dysregulation can benefit from hypnosis by:
• Reducing anxiety: Hypnosis can help lower anxiety and encourage relaxation, which may be especially beneficial for those who struggle with emotional dysregulation and frequently feel anxious.
• Addressing triggers: Hypnosis can assist individuals in replacing “triggers” with new more helpful responses and emotions.
• Creating change mechanisms: Hypnosis can assist individuals in creating mechanisms and an environment for emotions to evolve and grow out of the dysregulation state.
• Enhancing self-esteem: Hypnosis can help people gain more self-confidence and self-esteem, which can help them reduce emotional dysregulation.
• Reducing impulsivity: Hypnosis can assist those who struggle with emotional dysregulation in being more conscious of and adept at changing their impulsive nature.
Hypnosis works directly with the subconscious mind which regulates automated behaviors, actions and reactions. The hypnosis process gives a ‘way out’ for emotions and responses that do not serve and most importantly: replaces them with new automated behaviors, actions and reactions. Hypnosis addresses emotional dysregulation in a completely different way than traditional counseling and/or medication.
