Fear Can Feel Overwhelming and Paralyzing

A situation or environment can create terror feelings, cause the person to act irrational or make bad decisions in an attempt to avoid that situation or environment.

What happens that triggers fear?

When an emotionally disturbing event happens, the subconscious mind records the feeling and creates a memory.  When this emotion is triggered again the body goes into a defensive mode — some call this “fight or flight.”  In this protective mode, the subconscious mind is programmed to avoid the event causing that feeling at all costs.  For some people this can turn into running away, a panic attack or fighting with another person whether verbal or physical.  This is the subsconscious mind’s attempt at its own version of anxiety control.  This is why in the moment of fear you can feel “out of control”

Why talk therapy doesn’t solve fear driven issues

Talk therapy methods generally have a limited ability to help because talk therapy engages your conscious mind.  You may come to the point where you realize the fear is irrational, doesn’t make sense, etc. however the place where the memory is stored is in your subconscious mind.  Talk therapy does not gain access to the subconscious.  This is why many times clients who have been in years of talk therapy come to Meridian Peak Hypnosis.  Many times we make good progress with the client in a much lower number of sessions.
