Functional Vomiting Syndrome Symptoms and Causes
Cyclic or Functional Vomiting Syndrome (also known as CVS) is characterized by recurrent episodes of nausea and vomiting which can last hours or days. The sufferer is comfortable during the interval between the two episodes and there are no symptoms during that period. The condition can be very severe with vomiting every 10 to 15 minutes.
Functional vomiting syndrome or CVS has been recognized for over 100 years. There is unfortunately still very little known about the causes of this condition and there is no test that can confirm it. Functional vomiting syndrome has been experienced by all age groups. Various physical, infectious and psychological factors have been implicated for functional vomiting syndrome.
Diagnosis of Cyclic or Functional Vomiting Syndrome
There is no test as yet that can confirm whether a person is suffering from functional vomiting syndrome or not. Individuals are only diagnosed with CVS through their symptoms and the exclusion of other conditions. High incidence of panic attacks, anxiety disorder, and depression is seen in persons suffering from functional vomiting syndrome. Most of the children outgrow the syndrome with time, however, some may transition to migraine or continue to have CVS as adults.
