Life After Death of a Parent
A parent dying can be an important step in life – one of those points after which life never seems to be the same again. Whether the death was expected or not, welcome or unwelcome — they are now gone.
Suddenly, emotional, physical feelings surface and a new situation creates new demands on you. Most are surprised how overwhelming the experience of the death of a parent can be.
Coping with death is demanding
No matter what your relationship was like while they were still alive, coping with their death and your feelings, dealing with the process of grieving, adjusting to life without a parent can all take enormous demand on you. Add to this the continuation of work and family that are still living and you find you need to have all of your resources firing on the right cylinders to get through this straining time.
The death of a parent creates a state of shock and can make you feel disassociated with what is happening around you, or even as tho you are operating on auto-pilot. It is common to be overwhelmed by emotions or feel empty. All of these reactions are normal. The key is to feel what you feel and accept that it is okay to feel this way after what has happened.
Grieving is something you do
Grieving is a behavior and like all behaviors it can be done in a healthy, therapeutic way. In grieving, you gradually let go of the life that included the parent living in the present with you; and adjust to a new life where their presence is a memory that you use as a building block for your journey in your life.
