Seasonal Affective Disorder Is Very Real
According to the Mayo Clinic, most people having Seasonal Affective Disorder (aka, winter depression) have symptoms that start in the fall and continue into winter months. Seasonal Affective Disorder causes depression during months with lower amounts of sunlight. People who work at night or who work long hours in buildings with few windows can experience Seasonal Affective Disorder year-round. Other people can experience Seasonal Affect Disorder during extended times of overcast weather.
Seasonal affective disorder can make you feel lethargic, depressed, irritable and introverted. Common effects include insomnia, overeating at meals and taking in excessive carbs, sugar and junk food in general.
What causes Seasonal Affective Disorder or “Winter Depression?”
Seasonal Affective Disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance caused by the decrease in the body’s intake of light during daylight hours. The brain’s chemical melatonin plays a large role in regulating mood. The brain creates greater quantities when it is dark. During the fall and winter, the earth receives less sunlight during each day. An increase in melatonin causes symptoms of sleepiness, depression, lethargic body parts and makes it more difficult to carry out daily tasks that normally require lots of energy and activity.
For some, Seasonal Affective Disorder is the beginning of a cycle of depression that lasts for half of each year.
