What is Feeling Inadequate Like?
Feeling inadequate or inadequacy is another way of saying “not being good enough” and is experienced by everyone at one point or another. Inadequate feelings can be experienced in:
• Low self-worth
• Feeling incompetent
• Feeling powerless
• Feeling shameful too often
These feelings can interfere in the ability to maintain relationships, succeed at work or school or just feel at peace and happy.
There are many parts of life that can contribute to feeling inadequate, including childhood as well as your experiences at work. Having overcritical parents, cruel childhood or work peers, shaming authority figures or not having enough opportunities in life to engage can create inadequate feelings.
Workplace Inadequacy
Adults can experience workplace harassment or bullying and it can affect feelings of self-worth as well as self-confidence which can cause you to begin to doubt your ability to perform, your worth and your abilities. The strong desire and pressure to perform and to be a provider at home can only increase these feelings
Parenting Inadequacy
Parenting can produce feelings of inadequacy as many parents struggle with feeling like they cannot adequately provide for their children financially, emotionally or physically. Parents who were made to feel inadequate when they were children may set unrealistic goals for themselves as parents, and thus continuing the cycle of inadequacy as adults as they fail to meet high standards later in life.
