Negative thoughts come into our mind – it is part of the human experience. But what we do with these thoughts can affect our health and well-being. Negative Automatic Thoughts are negative self talk that appears immediately, without us being aware of creating the thought actively. They’re often irrational, negative and have consequences personally, at home and at work.

Automatic Negative Thoughts Are Well-Rehearsed Habits the Mind Uses

The mind develops a repository of ways to handle its world. It believes these methods can help keep you safe or avoid negative emotion. When in reality it is *filled* with negative emotion that becomes toxic for the body’s well-being. 

Common Automatic Negative Thoughts include:

All or Nothing Thinking – seeing things in black and white categories. If your performance falls short or perfect, you see yourself as a total failure
• Overgeneralizing – seeing a single negative event as a never ending pattern of failure and defeat
• Disqualifying the Positive – rejecting positive experiences saying “they don’t count” and not allowing change. You maintain a negative belief that is contradicted by everyday experiences
• Jumping to Conclusions – making a negative interpretation even tho there is no definite facts
• Catastrophizing – turning anything into a disaster. Not knowing any other way to think about things
• Emotional Reasoning – assuming your negative emotions reflect the way things are because you’re filled with emotions
• Should Statements – everything is something you should do, but seems impossible to do. Emotional consequences are the result of failing the “should’s”
• Labeling Yourself Inappropriately – an extreme form of overgeneralization. Instead of working through an issue, you negatively label yourself for it
• Personalizing – seeing yourself as the cause of a negative event which in fact you were not responsible for
