Pathological Demand Avoidance, often called PDA, is a way of experiencing the world where everyday expectations can quickly feel overwhelming or stressful, even when the person genuinely wants to participate. It isn’t about being difficult or unmotivated; instead, it comes from an intense internal response to feeling pressured or controlled. Most times the pressure or control does not exist, but the condition creates those emotions.
Ordinary tasks like household tasks, following routines, making decisions or responding to requests can suddenly feel unmanageable. This can lead to avoidance through humor, distraction, negotiation, or emotional reactions as a way to cope with the pressure. When that does not work, it can spiral into anger, withdrawal, fear and what is presented as medical issues that could never possibly be solved.
People with Pathological Demand Avoidance commonly use perceived illness as a way to avoid things that make them feel uncomfortable or not in control. People with Pathological Demand Avoidance are often highly perceptive, emotionally sensitive and deeply affected by their surroundings. They may appear confident on the outside while feeling anxious internally, especially when expectations feel rigid or unpredictable. Over time, this constant sense of pressure can lead to exhaustion, frustration, or emotional overwhelm in addition to negative outcomes socially and/or at work/school.
Common Signs and Symptoms of Pathological Demand Avoidance
• Strong avoidance of everyday demands, including simple tasks or expectations
• Heightened anxiety when feeling pressured, rushed, or told what to do
• Use of distraction, humor, or negotiation to escape responsibilities
• Emotional outbursts or sudden mood changes when overwhelmed
• Difficulty following routines, schedules, or structured plans
• Appearing socially confident while experiencing high internal stress
• Anger, withdrawal and fear when ultimately a task or situation must be completed
These traits often appear in daily life situations such as school, work, or home routines and are commonly driven by anxiety rather than defiance.
Hypnosis is a Powerful Tool For Improvement
Hypnosis works with the area of the mind where Pathological Demand Avoidance is stored which is the subconscious mind. This is the part of the mind that regulates automated actions, reactions, habits and emotions. Hypnosis gains direct access to this area and gives a ‘way out’ for responses that are not working and most importantly: replaces with a new set of habits, actions and reactions.
Hypnosis works directly with the source of the problem. Hypnosis can help clients remove a toxic program running in the subconscious mind and replace it with one that is positive and helpful. An emotional reset is a common outcome that helps clients.
Hypnosis is proven more effective than traditional counseling
In a study in American Health Magazine, hypnosis and hypnotherapy have a 93% success rate compared with lower results from other methods of therapy which require far more sessions. Click here to learn more about hypnosis and its high success rate.
